Business Lessons From Google Corporation
Google is one example of a successful company thanks to continuous innovation. Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin on 4 September 1998 when they were still a student at Stanford University. Starting from a Google search engine, Google has now become the largest Internet company that creates a variety of services and applications.
Of course it takes a long journey to become Google what it is today. It takes hard work and continuous innovation to constantly evolving. They apply several unique custom developed to foster a culture of innovation and creativity in its environment. One way is to hold weekly meetings. During the meeting all the Google employees from around the world freely provide questions to Google executives, either directly or via email. In the meeting, employees are also entitled to critique or suggestions and also deliver creative ideas to the leaders of the company.
Here is something that we can learn from Google Corporation which has been successful in business which delivered the CEO of Google, Larry Page, as quoted from Wired.com:
1. "Crazy" Performing
In pushing his team to innovate, Larry Page always give advice " If you do not do crazy things, you do things wrong." Perhaps the phrase is very appropriate in the business world, especially those who engaged in creative technology. Many companies that becomes large then it careless and forgot to innovate. It is highly avoided by Google. Every Google employees are required to "Think Big" or think creatively, to find and do things that are not ordinary .
Since childhood, Larry Page dream is wanted to be an inventor. He does not just want to create great products, but also wants to change the world. And it proved to be a dream come true and stay alive until now that he embodied with Google. Satisfaction is when he and his team can develop innovative 10 times they had developed previously. So it is not surprising that innovation is the main core of Google's business. We can see from Google services such as Gmail, the email service which offers a storage capacity of 100-fold greater than the capacity provided by other email services.
Various other Google services also emerged from the ideas of "Crazy". As we see today, such as multiple language translation service in Google Translate. Map service “Google Maps”, and the latest is an Internet-based data storage services and cloud computing, “Google Drive”. And of course the video sharing service YouTube, the Android operating system and Chrome browser is very interesting and has been used by millions of people in the world. All started from ideas of "Crazy".
The latest information, Google reportedly is building a project and a special lab called Google X. The lab contains a variety of facilities designed to support a variety of Google research to create future technologies. Like a car that can run itself as well as technology-based Augmented Reality glasses.
2 . Innovation Must be Consistent With Commercialization
One more business advice from Google CEO, Larry Page, innovations made must be followed by the commercialization step. We can take a lesson from Xeroc PARC company, a Xerox Corp. subsidiary. Established in 1970, Xerox PARC was famous for innovations in the field of technology and hardware. Some of the innovations made by Xeroc PARC plays an important role in the development of modern computing world, among them such as Ethernet, Graphical User Interface (GUI), as well as a laser printer technology.
Unfortunately Xeroc PARC is not too focused on commercialization. That's what makes the company failed. Larry gave the following example, which Tesla company. Tesla is one of the companies that he admired. Tesla engaged in developing innovative car. But in the end the company founded by Nikola Tesla is failed. It caused by too focused on innovation. Tesla spent 99 percent of his effort to develop products that people liked.
From those two example, we can take a lesson, that every company needs two things to succeed and thrive, namely innovation and commercialization.
3 . Never Too Focus On Competition
In contrast to other companies, Google is applying the philosophy to not overly focus on the competition. Google is focusing on the development of products and services, not just focus on competition and competition.
"What is interesting from the work if the best thing we can do is beat the other companies doing the same thing with us? That makes a lot of companies fall slowly. They tend to do the same with their ever done and made some minor changes." Said Larry Page.
According to Page, it is natural that many people always want to focus and do the things which they are sure not to fail. But more than that, to achieve success, a company needs to make a big change.
We can see when Google released its Gmail service. At that time it was still limited to be a search engine companies. Creating a web-based email service is a big leap for Google. Moreover Gmail dare provides email storage capacity many times greater than a similar email service provider at the time.
At the time Google developed Gmail. Already there are several other companies that have a search engine. Gmail will not exist if it just focus to compete with companies such search engines. Google prefers to focus on developing products and services.
That are three business lesson from Google. We can take a lesson from these advices to develop our business.
