The Symbolism Of The Pink Ribbon
For those who are still unaware of the symbolism of the pink ribbon, it can be stated that it came to be synonymous with hope for a better life for those who suffer from breast cancer. Because in the late 80's and early 90's the American society, and not only, was under the influence of the pain caused by this major disease: cancer. This led to the unfortunate situation where in every American family there was a person who either suffered from this disease or had knowledge of a close person who got sick or lost the battle with this terrible ailment.
In 1992 the pink ribbon was designated as the symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by cancer survivor Evelyn Lauder, the mother of William Lauder, Executive Chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies. The pink ribbon represents the fear of breast cancer and hope for a better future and the help of charitable acts of people and business altogether. All those who buy, display or wear a pink ribbon show that they are not indifferent to the suffering of so many women. It is estimated that more than 80 million pink ribbons have been distributed during the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign organized by Estée Lauder Companies with the support of William Lauder.

A variety of events are organized around the world and by the year, more and partners join this effort. Among the events organized in October with the occasion of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month can be named walks and runs as well as the illumination of certain landmarks not only in home cities, but worldwide as well. Thus, on the 1 October 2007 the Tokyo Tower was lit up in pink and in 2008 the Americans had the surprise to see a pink decorated White House. Another landmark that joined the breast awareness campaign was the Old City of Jerusalem, as pink lights were used to promote breast cancer awareness in October 2010. In total, more than 200 buildings around the world participated at this campaign. Some of the most famous of the participating buildings that can be named here are the Buckingham Palace in the UK, the Empire State Building and the Sydney Opera House.
Every year, more and more communities across the country participate in activities dedicated to the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thus, in 2002, more than 1.3 million citizens joined the National Race for the Cure, held in over 100 Us Cities.
