How to Become a Hotel Manager
A career as a hotel manager can be both
financially rewarding (depending on the size of the hotel, the yearly salary of
a hotel manager can range from $40,000 to over six
figures) and personally satisfying. Whether you already have experience in the
hospitality industry, or are simply interested in planning out your future
career path, if you are good at communicating with others, have a strong work
ethic, are able to organize and assign tasks, and enjoy working around other
people on a daily basis, working as a hotel manager may be a good fit for your
personality and set of skills.
Requirements
Because of the competitive nature of the industry,
almost all hotel manager positions require a degree from a four year
university. The two most popular four year degrees for hotel managers are hotel management and restaurant management, but it is
still possible to obtain a job as a hotel manager with a different four year
degree.
In order to land a job as a hotel manager,
you will also need experience working in the hospitality industry. The more
experience you can gain working directly in the hospitality industry, the
stronger your position as a potential candidate for becoming a hotel manager
will be.
Instructions
1. If you don't have a four year degree, this is the first thing you need
to look into completing. If you are graduating high school and plan on
attending a four year university after you graduate, you should choose one that
offers a degree in hotel management or restaurant management.
If your current life situation does not
allow you to attend a traditional four year university, it is still possible to
get a Bachelor's degree by attending an online university. There are a wide
variety of online degree programs, and when you are looking into them, the most
important thing to do is find one that is accredited. If you are unable to find
an online program that offers degrees in hotel management or restaurant
management, the best degree for you to pursue would be another type of
management or related business degree.
Once you have your degree (or if your
schedule permits, as you are working on it), you should begin to gain work
experience within the hospitality industry. You won't begin in the hospitality
industry as a hotel manager, so be prepared to work and gain experience at a
lower level.
When you are interviewing for potential
lower level positions within the hospitality industry, talk to the person
interviewing you about the type of training programs that are offered to help
you increase your set of skills and prepare you for a higher level job within
the hotel industry.
2.
After you have a degree and have
accumulated enough experience and training to make yourself an attractive
candidate for a position as a hotel manager, it is time to start looking for
job openings. Ideally, you will be able to move up within the company where you
have received your experience and training, but if this does not seem like it
will be an option, you will need to take your qualifications and begin looking
for a position outside of your current company.
